Firefox: Sort Bookmarks

Firefox Sort Bookmarks Extension

I have raved about the benefits of Mozilla's Firefox browser over Microsoft's Internet Explorer.  One drawback to Firefox is that it doesn't sort your bookmarks (aka: favorites).  An extension was developed for Firefox 0.9 that would sort your bookmarks, but hasn't been updated for Version 1.0.  I have modified this extension for it to work with the latest version of Firefox (1.0).  I have tested it and it works well.

This extension does not install automatically into Firefox.  After you click on the "Install Now" link, a dialogue will come up and you must either:
  • Select to open with Firefox
    - OR -
  • Save it to your hard drive (on your desktop or anywhere else) and then open it with Firefox.  To do this you select Save to Disk from the dialogue.  After the file downloads, in Firefox go to File, Open File, select the Sort_Bookmarks_0.5.0.1.xpi file you downloaded, and click Open.

I appreciate the feedback I have received and am delighted so many people have found this fix helpful.  I apologize for not having time to address each person's concerns individually.  Following many of your suggestions, I have modified the installation directions in hope they are more clear and easier to follow.  Additionally, I appended a suggestion I received by email.  If my directions are still confusing, hopefully this will help.

Thank you for developing the plug-in. It is a life saver for me.

I tried your instructions and they did not work.

Then, I clicked download to disk which put the .xpi file on my desktop.

Then, I copied it to the main Firefox directory.

Then, I double-clicked it and Firefox then installed it and it works just perfectly.

You might try this yourself and modify your installation instructions accordingly.

Again, thank you for the plug-in!!!!

I had the same problem as Mark, but I'm glad to say that his solution worked. Which is great news, as I absolutely needed this extension. Thank you so much.

I couldn't get any of the suggestions to work in order to install the sort bookmarks extension and then I came accross a post on another web site that suggested dragging the XPI onto the Extensions window and that did the trick. Thanks for providing the update.

Thanks muchly. I tried simply setting install.rdf to allow it, but using that crashed Firefox. This, well, does not.

Hallelujah! Thanks both to you and to Torisugari. I guess it's common knowledge that Firefox by itself doesn't sort bookmarks, but I didn't know that until today and have been struggling for weeks - right-clicking all over the place, searching the Help files, fiddling with the order in the Manage Bookmarks window, etc. - to make it work. Today I finally found your extension, and I'm delighte.

One suggested addition to your installation inststructions: you might remind folks that after they do everything else you suggest, they have to quit FF, then relaunch it. I knew to do that, but I suspect a lot of people don't.

-----Firefox 1.0 accepted and installed the modified 0.9 Sort Bookmarks extension without any problems.
-----However, shortly after restarting FF and sorting bookmarks, browser took longer than usual to open webpages, then it crashed.
-----Re-opened FF again; this time, it crashed upon sorting bookmarks.
-----Uninstalled the 1.0 modified 0.9 Sort Bookmarks extension. Really like the organizing-features of SB, but will wait for THE actual updated FF 1.0 Sort Bookmarks version that won't cause "illegal function errors".

Found this today, after being annoyed about the sorting business. Followed the instructions, I downloaded it and ran from File- Open, and it worked fabulously. Thanks!

Tested on:
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; rv:1.7.3) Gecko/20041001 Firefox/0.10.1

It works at the first attempt. Thank you very much, Victor, for this handy improvement of my favorite browser ;-)

Thanks for this!

Sort bookmarks is essential and I was disappointed to find it didn't work with 1.0.

Thanks for trying to help with this bookmark plug-in, but it did not work with Firefox 1.0 running on Win2K.

Any other options?

Sir,

thank you for making your "sort bookmarks" plugin available. It fixed a massive flaw in an otherwise excellent browser. I am grateful for the work you did.

Thanks again

Thanks for the plug-in. Works great! I followed the directions posted by your user, which worked well. The original directions did not work for me on my win 98SE machine running "Firefox 1.0 preview release."

Thanks a lot for the plug in - I see there is actually a "sort by name" feature that comes with 1.0 now, but it doesnt seem to do subdirectories, so this should do nicely. Thanks.

Great extension -- very helpful. Lack of bookmark sorting in Firefox was really bugging me. Thanks for taking the time to code up this tool, and for your generosity in sharing it.

I could not get your program to work, I tried everything I could think of but had no luck, however I did find one that installs without any trouble, just click and it is done. This is the address if you want to pass it on . http://extensionroom.mozdev.org/

Thank you, Victor!

The following may be helpful to anyone who has been struggling with this:

(I have Win 98 SE, Firefox 1.0, but I don't think it matters, except to reassure anyone with the same.)

1. Download it with a right-click and "save as" and put it somewhere you can find it. (In my case C:/Download, but Desktop or anywhere is fine.)

2. To install from the Firefox browser, Click on File (top left corner!), and select Open File from the drop down menu there.

3. A little "Browse" window will open. Use this to go to where the downloaded program is. Once you have found it by opening your way to it, select it and click open.

4. Presto! It is installed. Close Firefox and open it again. You do not have to reboot the computer.

5. Now -- the part I did not see mentioned in comments above -- From Firefox browser, click on Tools, then select Extensions from the drop down menu.

6. The little Extensions window with a list of your extensions opens. Click on Sort Bookmarks (The fantastic free program you have just installed). It will highlight with blue -- Then click Options.

7. A little dialogue box will open and you can make your choices. Then click Sort Bookmarks. Ta-Da!!!

It is actually much easier than I have made it seem. My apologies if you knew some or all of that already. I hope this is helpful.

Thanks again Victor. My Bookmarks were a terrible mess before I found your program!

The only "problem" I have with sorting bookmarks with FF is that when you actually do sort them, the bookmarks drop down menu disappears and you must then drop the menu down again. Is there a way to keep this from happening (IE does not have this "problem").

awesome. thanks heaps for that. and thanks to Chiang Rai for his instructions.

I'm so glad that I found this plugin. Sorting my bookmarks A to Z finally works! I never understood why firefox had an option to sort bookmarks, but only when editing them. Thank you Victor for adding this much needed tool.

Brilliant - thanks! It's quite amazing that Firefox hasn't got this built-in...
